Location and lighting
The flower needs sunlight all year round, while the rays falling on it should be direct. It must be placed on windows facing south. In summer, the plant will do great outdoors (on the balcony or in the garden).
In the autumn-winter period, additional illumination should be provided to the palm tree by means of phytolamps. The duration of daylight hours should be at least 10 hours.

While the plant is developing vigorously, the optimal temperature for it will be in the range of 22-25 degrees. A constant supply of fresh air is the main condition for the health of the Canary date. That is why it is necessary to ensure the flow of a slight draft into the room where it is located. In winter, airing should be approached with caution - the plant reacts negatively to sudden changes in temperature.
If the Canary date is in the stage of intensive growth, it will need to be watered as much as possible. As soon as the top of the soil dries out, you can do the next watering. Many botanical gardens located in temperate latitudes traditionally form collections of tropical and subtropical plants in greenhouses. The greenhouse of the botanical garden of the Samara State University (SamSU) is no exception. This is one of the oldest and largest greenhouses in the Middle Volga region.
The greenhouse farm began operating in 1932, with the organization of a local botanical garden. At first it was a small semi-basement greenhouse by the Lower Pond. Here seeds of various plants were sown, planting material for open and closed ground was grown.

On the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia (CPA), one of the most famous ornamental plants is the representatives of the palm family. Their appearance at the ChPA is mainly associated with the activities of the Sukhum Botanical Garden (now the Institute of Botany of the ANA). By the end of the 19th century, large collections of palm trees were also collected in private gardens, for example, Sinop (planted in 1872-1878). In the Sukhum subtropical arboretum (SSD, founder N.N.Smetskaya (1894), a collection of palms of about 40 species was created.
Having gone beyond the limits of collections and nurseries, palm trees gradually became the most famous integral part of the southern landscape. Although, very cold winters (1910-1911, 1924-1925, etc.) carried out a significant correction of their species and form diversity. In 1926, the taxonometric composition of the SSD decreased by almost 2 times (21 species and shape). At the same time, the distribution is like
resistant, got a high bud of several forms, Canary date, low hamerops, hybrid butia. Forming a large number of germinating seeds, multiple self-seeding, they, in places, such as, for example, a bud, become weeds. Along with this, some types of palm trees still remain beautiful objects only in collections. Their limited distribution is explained either by a complete lack of fruiting, or by the difficulties of seed germination, or by inability to grow conditions.
Now the collection of the Institute of Botany contains palms of four rare species, three of which are of American origin, and one is from China. All from the fan-leaved group.
Brachea dulcis Mart. - The brachea is sweet. The only species of the genus comes from Mexico. In nature, it often grows on rocky hills with rather poor soils. This determined its popular name rockpalm.
In Sukhum, it was planted in 1892 in the garden of P.E. Tatarinov. It is given in the list of plants by L.I. Rubtsov (1937). According to S.G. Saakov in 1954 was listed in the list of cultivated. Currently, the only specimen of this beautiful palm tree grows in the SSD above the palmaria. In nature, this plant is 3.0-5.0 m high, with a diameter of about 20.0 cm. The leaf blade is 1.2-1.5 m in diameter, round, rigid, deeply dissected into 50 segments, bluish-blue. Peduncles are branched 1.5-2.0 m long, pubescent.
In the SSD, the plant height is 4.7 m, the diameter is 27.0 cm. The trunk lies at the base, the crown is turned towards the south. From the northeastern side it is oppressed by a large polysyllabic bamboo. Estimated age 80 years. Blooms annually. Fruiting only once in 2016 Fruits fell off without ripening. No frost damage was noted.
Erytheae dulis S. Watson - Edible Erythea. Origin: about. Guadeloupe, N. California. A beautiful palm tree with large folded light green bluish leaf blades up to 90.0 cm in diameter with 70.0-80.0 segments, divided up to half. In nature, it reaches a height of 9.0 m, up to 45.0 cm in diameter. Edible fruits, sweet fragrant pulp. According to L.I. Rubtsov (1937), already at that time in the SSD bore fruit, the seeds were viable.
Landing was carried out presumably in 1901-1905, A.I. Kolesnikov (1964) pointed out that in Sukhum at the age of 50 e. edible reached 6.0 m in height, 45.0 cm in trunk diameter, with a crown diameter of 4.5 m. There is information that in 1910 one ten-year-old seedling was transferred to the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. These palms were badly damaged during the cold winter of 1949-50. Currently, two specimens of e. edible, apparently preserved from the first plantings in the park. There is information that in the first years of the existence of the arboretum there were many such palms. In the archives of N.N. Smetsky, there is information that those taxa, of which there are many specimens in the arboretum, as a rule, were brought in the form of seeds. We have seen their growth and development of these palms since the early 80s of the XX century. They have never suffered from winter cold, although such severe winters as in 1949-1950. at this time was not. Now palm trees are 8.5 and 9.0 m in height, 30.0 and 38.0 cm in diameter, crowns 4.5 x 4.5 and 4.5 x 4.5 m. Good condition, decorative, bear fruit every year.
Before the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia 1992-1993. in the SSD, work was carried out aimed at improving yields, increasing seed germination. Clusters of ripening fruits were covered with two-layer gauze. The fruits ripened, the seed germination was high. The nursery successfully grew the seedlings of this beautiful palm tree and were actively sold. The further fate of the realized plants is not known.
In our opinion, the longevity, excellent condition, high decorativeness of the described species, successful fruiting, good seed germination, rapid growth of seedlings allow confirming the prospect of a wider use of e. edible in both single and alley plantings.
Livistona chinensis (Jacq.) R.Br. ex Mart. - Chinese Livistona. Origin-Yu. China, s. Taiwan, Japan, grows more often in warm coastal regions. Leaf blades are large, bright green, radially folded, split in half. Segments are double-incised, ends drooping. The middle segments of the lamina are the longest.
Already in 1894 she was planted in the SSD. Prof. A.V. Vasiliev in the "Flora of trees and shrubs of the subtropics Zap. Georgia ”, (1956, v. IX), noted that in the 30s of the XX century, Livistona bore fruit many times, gave seeds with good germination. At that time, nurseries of L. Chinese from its own seeds. But frost is fatal for this palm tree. Many plants died in the winter of 1928-1929, and in 1949-1950. l. the Chinese died everywhere. In 1974 D.A. Globa - Mikhailenko indicates that the only tree of this species on the NPK grows in the Batumi Botanical Garden. However, the plant L. Chinese, about 60 years old grows on the territory of the Arboretum of the Institute of Botany on curtain 37. Height over 4.5 m, diameter 30.0 cm. Grows very slowly, did not bloom. Stands in the shade of a large tree of cunningamia lanceolate.She shelters for the winter every year.
Rapidophyllum hystrix H. Wendl et Drude is another rare interesting bushy needle palm (porcupine palm). The only species of a monotypic genus. At home, a protected species, it grows naturally in the south of the North. America in semi-shady places on low, damp swampy areas with rich soils. The trunks are low, covered with thick brown felt, often straight. A distinctive feature of this palm is the presence of thin needles up to 30 cm long on the trunks. Leaf blades are rounded 60.0-70.0 cm in diameter, deeply divided into 15-25 segments, dark green, shiny. It is considered the most frost-resistant palm in the world. In Abkhazia, in the cold winter of 1949-1950. according to some sources it did not suffer, according to others - the leaves of Rapidophilum froze a little. In the list of SSS plants L.I. Rubtsov (1937) has already been indicated. According to S.G. Saakov, "is cultivated from Sukhum and further south", did not bloom, did not bear fruit. YES. Globa-Mikhailenko (1976) writes that this palm tree grows in single specimens in Sukhum and Batum. It is not introduced due to the lack of flowering and fruiting. At present, the collection of the Institute of Botany of ANA contains three specimens of this palm: 1 in the arboretum, 2 in the SSS, in the Botanical Garden (Curt. 10) growing in ideal ecological conditions. The plot is low, damp, shady. The plant covers an area of 1.5 x 1.5 m. The stems are up to 1.0 m high, the total height of the palm is 2.7 m, the crown diameter is 4.7 x 5.5 m. It blooms, good condition, decorative. Growing conditions for rapidophyllum in the SSD are less comfortable. Instance on kurt. 3 grows next to a large Himalayan cedar, well lit. Endemic about. Taiwan, growing in the forests of the lower and middle zone (400-2000 m) throughout the island. Evergreen tree, up to 15.0 m in height, crown 1.0-4.0 m in width.
Leaves are lanceolate-oval, 2.5-13.0 cm long, 1.0-4.0 cm wide. Pointed at the apex, with a blunt wedge-shaped base, leathery, pale green or glabrous above, white-purple-gray-blue below, densely pubescent, with three veins at the base. The petiole is 0.7-3.5 cm long. Flowers are small, pedicels are short, 1.5-2.0 mm long. Sepals 5, round-oval, petals 5, oblong-ovate, with pubescent base. Pistillate flowers 6.0 mm, sepals 1.5 mm long, pubescent outside, petals 3.0 mm long, ovary broadly round, double stigma, curved downward.
